Relining drains – now even simpler than digging

Relining sewer drains is simpler, more cost-effective, faster and far less destructive than digging.

And now it is even less complicated.

The Victorian Building Authority recently re-released their guidelines for laying sewer drains in “reactive soils, unstable or water-charged ground”. (You can read them at this link http://www.vba.vic.gov.au/__data/assets/pdf_file/0013/22342/3.06-Drainage-Drains-in-reactive-Soils,-Unstable-or-Water-Charged-Ground.pdf  )

The guidelines tell you have to:

– first assess the ground to work out which classification of soil applies, including possibly getting a site inspection from a geo-technical engineer,

– rank the site on a ranking system from “non-reactive” to “highly-reactive”

– use special drain installation methods depending on which ranking the site has

– you may have to even install certain special drainage joints, depending on the site.

All this trouble, as well as the inconvenience of digging and the cost of restoration, can be eliminated if you just reline your drains.

With relining drains, there is no need to assess the soil as you are not digging up and replacing a drain. You are just relining the existing drain.

So keep your life simple and just reline your drains.

The Drain man, Fishing rod

Look what we fished out of someone’s drain..

After 15 years in the business, we are used to finding all sorts of things blocking people’s drains.

But last week we had a new one. We were called to a property which was suffering from a drain blockage.

We put our camera down the drain to do our regular inspection to see what was causing the blockage.

And something looked a bit fishy. Very fishy in fact! It was a fishing rod.

We’re not exactly sure how it got down there but we suspect that someone might have thought they could clear a blockage in a drain the same way you land a big fish!!! Using a fishing rod.

Unfortunately by the time we used our drain clearing equipment, including a high pressure water-jetter to clear the rod out the way, there wasn’t much left of it.

But our drainage plumber did get a picture of what was left and one thing is sure.

No one will be using that rod to catch anything, ever again.

So remember, if you’ve got something stuck in your drain, that shouldn’t be there, please don’t be embarrassed. Give us a call on 1800 843 372 or email enquiries(at)thedrainman.com.au and we’ll come and clear it out.

Tree-roots in sewer leads to potentially explosive situation

All is not what it seems inside Melbourne’s sewer and stormwater drains. And the smells emanating from them are not what you’d normally expect.

Recently The Drain Man was called to inspect a blocked sewer drain at a property in Melbourne. We conducted our regular camera inspection on arrival, which revealed a large mass of tree roots growing through the drain. We immediately got to work and started clearing the “tree-roots” with a drain-clearing machine and high-pressure water jetter.

The core of the “tree-root” was proving very tough to cut through but the greater problem was that our plumber was starting to notice the aroma of gas. Not the usual “sewer gas” but real, actual, flame-burning gas!!!

He immediately stopped work and called the gas company who raced to the site and confirmed that indeed the “tree-root” in the sewer was in actual fact, a gas pipe! The leak was sealed and the fire brigade came to clear out any gas from the sewer network.

Some idiot, many years ago, when the gas lines were laid, had simply drilled a hole through the sewer pipe and laid the gas pipe right through it! Over the years, tree-roots had entered the sewer around the hole caused by the gas pipe and these roots had wrapped themselves around the pipe, completely encasing it and making it look like a thick tree-root.

It’s not the first time this has happened. We’ve had many times where people have reported a “blockage” in their stormwater drains, only to discover that someone has run a telecommunications or cable TV conduit straight through their drain. In fact, we even had someone who had decided to use the stormwater drain as a conduit in which to run the entire cable through!

So if you have something blocking your drains and you’re not absolutely sure what it is, please don’t try to clear it yourself. Call a professional drain clearing service, like The Drain Man. We’ll take the risk, not you! Call us on 1800 843 372.

The Drain man, Hilary Harper,

The Drain Man talks ‘Fatbergs’ on 774 ABC Radio

Brendan “The Drain Man” Dover was invited recently to speak on 774 ABC Radio about the growing problem of ‘Fatbergs’ in Melbourne’s sewers.

He joined Hilary Harper on her Saturday morning show, October 4th around 10.30am.

Fatbergs are a growing problem, caused by fats and oils being poured down drains, which then cool and congeal. Then so-called “flushable” wipes and other rubbish get stuck to the mess and it just keeps growing. More fat and oil gets added, then more wipes, then more things that shouldn’t be flushed and eventually you end up with a ‘fatberg’.

In some cities around the world, these ‘fatberg’ have grown to the size of a London Bus or the length of a Jumbo Jet. They block up sewers, take days to clear and cause all sorts of grief.

Brendan spoke to Hilary about this problem and how people can prevent ‘fatbergs’ from forming in their sewers, by not pouring fats and oils down the sink, not flushing wipes or any other non-paper items down the toilet and generally being mindful of what goes into our drains.

For more advice on what you should or shouldn’t put down your drain or your toilet, please talk to a professional drain expert, like The Drain Man. And if you have flushed something down your toilet that is causing your problems, please call us urgently on 1800 843 372.

The Drain man, Gold Coast BUsiness Excellence Award, Award

The Drain Man licensor wins Sustainability Award

The Drain Man is proud to be a licensee of the Nu-flow Drain Relining System. And we are even prouder that recently, Nu-flow won an Environment & Sustainability Award at the Gold Coast Business Excellence Awards.

To be eligible for this Award, Nu-Flow had to highlight how their environmental practices, both new and continuing, helped to enhance and sustain the environment. With a drain relining system that removes the need to dig up drains or damage existing gardens and trees, the Nu-Flow system is a boon to the environment. It also retains in place existing drain infrastructure so there is no need to dispose of old drainage pipes.
A relined drain prevents the leakage of sewage into the surrounding earth and negates the need to dig up and remove the contaminated soil.

Overall the Nu-Flow drain relining system is a boon to the environment and does a great deal to contribute to a more sustainable solution for damaged drains and sewers.

The Drain Man congratulates Nu-flow on this important Environment & Sustainability Award. As the exclusive Melbourne licensee for Nu-Flow, we intend to instal thousands more new drain linings this year and so do our bit for the Environment and Sustainability.

Congrats to Hawks – Grand Finalists 2014!

As a sponsor of Hawthorn, we are naturally a little biased about the team’s fantastic victory on the weekend.

So we just wanted to give a little shout-out to the Hawks for being the AFL Premiers 2014.

Winning back-to-back premierships is an almighty task. Well done to the coach, all the players, the on and off-field team and everyone else around the Hawthorn Football Club who made this possible.

It was a thrilling victory and one to be admired for the way it was carried out, to the very highest standards of professionalism.

At The Drain Man, we strive hard to be the very best at what we do. So we are very proud to be associated with the mighty Hawks who proved they are once again, the best AFL team in the country on Saturday.

We look forward to seeing the Premiership Cup out at our Ringwood office, when it does its round of the sponsors and supporters.

The Drain man, Melbourne Fatberg

Got a fatberg? The Drain Man can help.

It seems like everyone is talking about “fatbergs”.

There was one in London last year that was the size of a London Bus.

There was another in London last week that was the length of a Boeing 747.

And there was another one here in Melbourne, in the Yarra Valley Water system.

So what is a “fatberg”? It’s basically an accumulation of fats, grease, oil and other things that have accumulated in the drains. Often then we get rubbish and other things that people have flushed down toilets or poured down drains.

For example, the supposed “flushable” wipes, which are not really flushable, will add to the problem.

So don’t ever pour fats and oils down your kitchen sink and don’t flush anything down the toilet except for paper and bodily wastes.

But if you do find yourself experiencing a “fatberg” blockage, call The Drain Man on 1800 843 372.

The Drain Man fashions brand new drain-clearing tool

At The Drain Man we pride ourselves on having and using the best, most advanced drain clearing equipment available to clear blocked drains.

But sometimes, even the most advanced equipment won’t get the job done.

Recently we visited a construction site where someone had accidentally poured concrete down an exposed drain. It was under a concrete slab that had recently been laid and no one was interested in digging up the slab to access the drain.

So the builder, a plumber, another mate of the builder and someone else had all had a go at trying to get the concrete out of the drain. All without success.

Finally someone got smart and called The Drain Man.

We came out on site, put a camera down the drain and took a good look at the situation. While we often clear concrete in drains, in this particular situation our plumber on-site knew it had particular challenges. So rather than using the standard drain clearing equipment, he fashioned a unique tool on the spot.

Essentially he took another piece of equipment, inserted a bolt into the head of it, cut slots into the bolt head to fashion a type of drill bit, then attached it to a sewer clearing machine. Basically he created a “concrete drill”. Using this he was able to drill away at the sides of the concrete until it came free, then push it out of the drain.

All without damaging the drain itself.

Another example of the dedication, effort and on the spot thinking that we pride ourselves on here at The Drain Man. So if you want a drain clearing business that goes beyond the usual and really works to get you a result, call 1800 843 372.

The Drain Man, Stormwater drain reline, drain reline, sewer reline

Now that’s a drain lining!

There are stormwater drains we reline. And then there are STORMWATER DRAINS we reline.

Recently we did one of the bigger drain relining jobs we’ve done for a while.

The City of Monash had discovered one of its concrete stormwater drains was cracked, crazed and had a major dislodgement, causing it to block during heavy rains. The drain was 375mm in diameter.

The Drain Man was called in to reline a 15 metre length of the drain, around the Brad Street Road area in Mt Waverley.

A team of 5, lead by two of our most experienced drain reliners, got to work.

It was a large lining that needed some 80 kilos of resin poured into the felt lining, that was inserted into place and inflated to reline the inside of the drain. It took just 4 hours to have the lining in place.

The lining hardened overnight and by midday the next day, the team had cleaned up and left behind a smooth, relined drain that will run fast and free next time it rains. Disturbance to the local residents was virtually nothing and importantly there was no need to dig up and replace that section of the storwater drain which would have involved massive excavations and earthworks.

The Drain man, VTIO, Soil Secrets Seminar,

The Drain Man speaks at VTIO Seminar – Trees & Drains can co-exist

Brendan Dover, aka The Drain Man, was invited to speak yesterday at the Victorian Tree Industry Organisation’s Soil Secrets Seminar.

The seminar featured a number of key local and international speakers who spoke about various issues facing trees in the urban environment. The theme of Brendan’s talk was that “trees and drains can co-exist”.

It focussed on how relining drains can reduce tree root intrusions and therefore reduce the need to cut down trees unnecessarily.

The audience, which comprised a wide variety of people from the arborial industry, were very pleased to discover they can recommend that if people do have problems with tree-roots in their drains, there is no longer any need to cut down the trees or even dig up their drains.

The existing drains can stay in place and simply be relined, therefore ensuring there is no disturbance to the soil in which the trees reside.

For more information about the seminar and the role The Drain Man is playing in helping to preserve trees, please watch this short video http://youtu.be/llZEuMFvMAA
